Creator Economy

How talent, platforms and institutions are rebuilding media around individual voices.

Unwell took its first outside money at a $500m valuation

Alex Cooper and Matt Kaplan sold an undisclosed stake to WTSL, the Silver Lake-backed firm of ex-Endeavor Patrick Whitesell and Jason Lublin, with capital earmarked for acquisitions across a dozen-plus podcasts, film and TV, live events, an agency and drinks; Unwell claims 70m women reached monthly. The raise landed two months after Vanity Fair’s toxic-workplace investigation into Kaplan.

Deirdre Bosa is building AI a daily markets show

Bosa is leaving CNBC after 15 years to launch Deirdre Bosa Live with producer Jasmine Wu. The bet is that AI now needs its own daily markets-style product: fast enough for builders and investors, specialized enough for sponsors, and personal enough to travel outside the cable bundle.

Whatnot raised $545m at a reported $20bn to make live shopping a media format

The Series G is the largest live-shopping raise; sellers moved more merchandise in the first half of 2026 than in all of 2025, 650,000 users join weekly, and the valuation nearly doubled from October’s $11.5bn. It belongs here because live commerce is creator-hosted programming monetised at the transaction rather than the impression, competing for the same talent and hours as ad-funded media.

ClipFarm turns clipping into performance-based distribution

Creators and brands supply footage, set campaign rules and put up a budget; ClipFarm’s 450,000-person clipper network edits and posts short-form videos, then gets paid only when clips hit validated view thresholds. Campaigns typically start at $10,000–$20,000. The model de-risks outsourced social production: buyers pay for reach that materializes, not editing hours. The caveat is margin; it works best when views drive followers, sales, sponsorship value or channel growth, not when platform ad revenue is the only return.

Clay Travis is rebuilding the OutKick playbook outside Fox

Travis is preparing a new sports-and-politics media site before football season, after selling OutKick to Fox in 2021 and exiting day-to-day operations this summer. The stack is familiar: syndicated radio with 550+ stations, daily video, Hutton & Withrow, and likely sports-betting sponsors. The question is whether Travis can recreate founder-led audience economics once the original brand sits inside Fox News Digital.

The Ankler left Substack as a profitable, roughly $10m business

Its 18-person operation runs 15 newsletters; 2024 metrics included 75,000 subscribers, 21% free-to-paid conversion and 2.1% monthly churn. Passport mapped one tier into six audiences, with $90 standalone newsletters beside a $169 bundle. The portability test is whether that segmentation improves conversion and retention, not the 13% YoY growth disclosed on moving day.

Perfectly Imperfect wants taste to become platform infrastructure

Tyler Bainbridge's newsletter brand plans a Tumblr-like publishing network with community tools, monetization, customization, lower rates and deeper analytics. Its edge is curation rather than scale; the missing proof is whether a distinct cultural brand can recruit enough publishers to support a platform business.

Piers Morgan raised $27m at a $145m valuation to make himself replaceable

The June round was co-led by Raine Ventures and Greece’s Antenna Group, with Elisabeth Murdoch and the Reuben brothers participating: an investor list that is distribution as much as capital. Morgan bought the brand out of News UK in January 2025 and now runs royals, history and football spin-offs plus a Channel 5 deal recycling YouTube output into linear cash. His framing: the model is “based around making it less and less reliant on me.”

Brands are moving half their creator budgets below 20,000 followers

eMarketer puts about 45% of US influencer spend there in 2026, and the sharper number is at the bottom: under-5,000 creators take roughly 20%, up from just over 3% in 2021. Target and American Eagle now run programmes accepting creators with 500 followers. The buy is volume of plausible recommendation, which is affiliate, not advertising.

Europe got its TBPN clone and $1.6m to run it

European Technology Network raised from Powerhouse Capital, Axel Springer and LadBible on 5m views since October. But OpenAI bought TBPN for its founders’ marketing instincts, not the livestream; a second-comer with the format and not the operator profile has no comparable exit.

New studio Wonderloom launches to acquire YouTube series and IP

Film/TV rights investor Content Partners (interests in 800+ studio films) and ex-Wheelhouse executive Ed Simpson formed Wonderloom Media to buy creator-owned channels and libraries - first deal: true-crime channel Dr. Insanity (5m subscribers, 1.3bn views). The model: collect the library's ongoing YouTube ad revenue, then extend the IP into TV, streaming, podcasts, licensing and international formats. Funding and deal terms undisclosed.

Ms. Rachel's recycled Netflix catalog drew 68.6m views - up 28% without a new upload since September

Her seasons outranked Cocomelon, while four YouTube-native kids' families together generated 161m equivalent views and 437m hours in Netflix's H1 data. That is a meaningful kids/family lane but only about 0.6% of total show hours: non-exclusive creator licensing can cheaply fill a high-repeat habit, not replace Netflix's broader programming engine.

Disney is using a two-day creator summit as an IP-and-talent scouting surface

Created in LA, built with former YouTube/Instagram executive Jon Youshaei, runs September 17–18 across the El Capitan Theatre and Walt Disney Studios lot, including Disney's first creator-video red-carpet premiere. Not yet a creator business - a relationship layer that can feed talent, formats and partnerships into a company built on turning characters into franchises.

Patreon cuts 20% of staff - 93 roles - while keeping the media-and-community strategy

CEO Jack Conte cited six months of "profound market change"; it's the largest cut since 2022. His own metrics — 300K+ earning creators, 1.5m new members a month from Patreon's network — argue the flywheel works. Conte says AI changed operations but isn't replacing the affected roles.

Vox grows affiliate revenue 31% by optimizing clicks it already had

Working with AI affiliate-ops vendor NucleusLinks (clients include Microsoft and Ziff Davis), Vox routed each affiliate click to the highest-earning network in real time by geo and device, auto-fixed broken links (up to 20% of affiliate revenue leaks there, per the vendor), and expanded merchant coverage — no editorial workflow changes. The template matters as search referrals fall: squeeze more yield per existing commerce visit instead of chasing volume.

Creator-economy M&A: record 70 deals in H1, and media IP dethrones software

Deals rose 23% YoY with 2026 projected past 100 (vs. 87 in 2025) — and for the first time media IP (27.1% of deals) overtook software (24.3%) as the top category. Quartermast’s James Creech: buyers are underwriting creators “on fundamentals, not narrative.”

Substack hires its first head of brand sponsorships

Substack named ex-Roku/PayPal exec Dan Robbins as its first head of brand sponsorships, formalizing and scaling an ad business that creators had previously sourced and negotiated themselves. The why: it’s a notable strategy shift for a company built on championing subscriptions over advertising, now treating sponsorships as a complementary revenue stream — and a competitive answer to Beehiiv, which already runs an ad network. The pitch to advertisers is trust and authority over reach: rather than noisy, algorithmic impressions, brands buy association with a creator’s credibility and a niche, high-intent audience. That’s reflected in the launch partners, which skew premium and tech/lifestyle — Uber, Balenciaga, T-Mobile, Whatnot, Granola, Polymarket and Yahoo Scout — with Substack adding “Creator Kits” to help writers signal availability for deals.

X courts creators with a livestreaming studio, video editor and $1m fund

X made two creator plays the same week: a revamped desktop live command center for Premium creators (streamlined setup, thumbnails, chat controls, real-time audience insights) backed by an extra $1m in livestreamer incentives, and a new built-in iOS video editor (captions, green screen). Product head Nikita Bier framed the editor as a push to get creators posting original video “that doesn’t exist on other platforms” rather than recycled or “stolen” reposts. Together the moves show X trying to become a home for creators rather than just a text or reposting feed — investing in original content, native video and live tooling to retain talent, grow ad and subscription value, and defend its live-event franchise as Threads erodes that lead.

TV news shifts to "hybrid talent" model as creator economics rewire bargaining power

Creator pay mirrors influencer pyramid: winner-take-most, with the middle trading stability for autonomy

Creator economy now estimated at $234B globally; 45.6% of U.S. creators earn $10K–$100K annually and only 5.7% clear six figures - replicating the well-worn pyramid where a handful capture headline figures while the majority earn modest sums, increasingly swapping predictable institutional income for the same money plus the operating burden of running a small business (production, sales, taxes, platform risk).
